Antique 16th Century Venetian Painted Gold Gilt Iron Strongbox with Original Key

About the Item

An extraordinarily rare and visually striking 16th-century Venetian iron treasure coffer, showcasing the height of Renaissance artistry and engineering. Crafted in the early to mid-1500s, this richly ornamented strongbox reflects the opulence and sophistication of the Venetian Republic at its zenith. Entirely hand-forged and embellished with intricate raised motifs, the surface is further adorned with exquisite hand-painted foliate patterns in traditional Venetian red and burnished gold leaf. The coffer’s palette and ornamental flourish are unmistakably Venetian- bold, elegant, and unmistakably regal. What sets this piece apart is its original and fully functional five-way mechanical locking system, an advanced security mechanism of the period that remains intact, complete with its finely crafted original key. Such systems were typically reserved for the highest echelons of society- aristocrats, cardinals, or wealthy merchants seeking to safeguard gold coins, precious jewels, or important documents. The box is in remarkable condition for its age, with the ironwork structurally sound and the painted surfaces retaining exceptional depth and character. The sophisticated mechanics combined with decorative gilding suggest it was more than just utilitarian—it was a status symbol. Provenance points to ownership by a prominent family within the Venetian Empire. This coffer would have originally occupied a place of honor within a palazzo or private study. This is a museum-grade piece- rarely seen on the open market- and would make a spectacular addition to any serious collection of Renaissance objects, or serve as a focal point in a refined interior space.
