Contains a Secret Compartment and Candle Sconces From our Writing Box collection, we are pleased to offer this Antique Burr Walnut Writing Box. The Writing Box of rectangular shape veneered in Burr Walnut with brass edging and double brass stringing to the front and lid, to the centre of the lid there is an engraved initial plaque reading ‘Presented to Mr James Bridge by the work people at Myrtle Grove Bleach Works 1874.’ The Writing Box is finished with flush mounted twin loop carry handles, one to each side. When opened the writing box reveals a black leather slope with gold tooling faced in exotic Coromandel wood. The top of the Writing Box is fitted with two inkwells, two lidded compartments, one containing a pair of candle sconces and a pen tray. The face of the interior has been strengthened with shaped brass inlay to the corners. The lower half of the slope lifts up to access a storage area with a similar storage area in the top half which contains a secret compartment. To access the secret compartment the user must remove the drawer locking pin and insert it into the right hand side sconce hole and press down. This activates a locked panel which springs open to reveal four individual secret drawers. The Antique Burr Walnut Writing Box is finished with a large pull out drawer which sits in the larger half of the body. The Antique Burr Walnut Writing Box dates to the second half of the 19th century during the Victorian period circa 1870. Measurements (Inches) 8.45 High x 19.9 Wide x 11 Deep The Writing Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key. Burr Walnut also known as figured Walnut is a highly prized wood which is formed by a growth deformation resulting from stress, disease or nurturing the tree in a specific way. Burr can be developed by blocking the sap flow of the tree by means of putting a French Walnut on top of the roots of an American Walnut. Due to the unusual properties, it is rare to come across a Walnut tree growing this way in the wild. Nurturing planted trees takes at least 80 years before it is mature enough to be cut for good purpose. Burr Walnut is highly desired for their unusual grain and pattern, used mostly in veneering larger pieces such as furniture would be joined by matching the veneer pieces or blending them together. Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special. Satinwood is found in India and Sri Lanka. It has a rich golden colour and an almost reflective sheen. Satinwood is traditionally used for high quality furniture. Victorian, an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901.
