Antique Georgian Amboyna Sewing Box

About the Item

Veneered in Amboyna Wood From our Sewing Box collection, we are pleased to offer this Amboyna Sewing Box. The Sewing Box of rectangular shape veneered in Amboyna with a circular mother of pearl escutcheon. The interior of the sewing box is fully fitted with a sewing kit having a ruched velvet inner lid storage compartment with gold tooling which contains the makers mark within the document storage for W. Dobson of Strand London. The removable sewing box has metal beaded compartments with bone bobbins, scissors and other sewing accessories. The Amboyna Sewing Box dates to the first half of the 19th century and the Georgian era during the reign of William IV circa 1830. Measurements (Inches) 5.12 High x 11.22 Wide x 8 Deep William Dobson was first recorded at 165 Strand, London in 1796, Dobson moved 166 in 1805-1825 and by 1820 he had premises at 16 and 38 Strand. He then moved to 162 Strand in 1826 and remained there until 1847. Fire Office insurance also note, in 1808, another address for Dobson at 4 and 5 George Place, Paradise Row, Chelsea which is thought to have been his personal home. Dobson was listed in the 1845 London Post Office Directory at 162 Strand, London as a desk & dressing case maker. Amboyna also known as Andaman Padauk, Maiou or Narra grows in parts of East Asia (Malaysia, the Philippines and Borneo) and is often golden brown to red brown in colour with red grain. It is a firm wood with wavy and often interlocking grain making it difficult to work with hand tools, despite this it turns well and produces a high polish. The Burr from these trees varies in colour from a golden yellow to a deep red with sharp, close burr pips. It is very sought after and used for only the finest furniture.
