Rare Magnolia Yellow Lacquer
From our Sewing Box collection, we are delighted to offer this Regency Japanned Chinoiserie Sewing Box. The Sewing Box of rectangular form with Chinoiserie design to each external panel featuring figures, flowers, foliage and birds finished with a large top scene. When opened the Sewing Box reveals a partitioned removable tray, ruched inner lid lining with drop down document storage and large storage area below the tray. The removable tray has its original silk and contains multiple lidded and open sewing compartments and the inner lining is finished with gold tooling. The Japanned Chinoiserie Box comes with a fully working lock and taselled key.
The Sewing Box dates to the early 19th century during the short lived Regency era (1811-1820) during the reign of Prince George circa 1815.The Sewing Box is a rare example finished in an almost magnolia coloured yellow.
Chinoiserie is a decorative style in Western art, furniture, and architecture that was undertaken particularly in the 18th century. It is characterized by the use of Chinese motifs and techniques hence the name Chinoiserie.
Regency is an era of British history between 1811 and 1820. The Regency era was initiated by King George III first suffered a debilitating illness in the late 1780s. He relapsed into his mental illness in 1810 and by the Regency Act in 1811 his eldest son George, Prince of Wales, was appointed prince regent to discharge royal functions. When George III died in 1820, the Prince Regent succeeded him as George IV.
Japanned (Japanning) in the decorative arts is a process that was very popular in 18th-century Europe for finishing and ornamenting wood, leather, tin, and papier-mâché in imitation of the celebrated lacquerwork of the Japanese.
