Antique Iron Bound Merchants Chest with Hidden Compartments

About the Item

Antique iron bound merchants chest with hidden compartments. The chest is very heavy, it has a great deal of thick iron banding and brass and iron studs both for strength and decoration. Chests like these were made for merchants to transport their goods and valuables across the world trade routes. Chests needed to be durable to stand up to the long and difficult journeys by sea and land. The chest has wheels which help with mobility, heavy carrying handles and a double hasp lock on the front. The iron work is decorated indicating that this one was made in the East probably India. Inside the chest has 3 hidden, lockable compartments also a drawer at the front. The chest is sound, a good looking piece with a colonial/medieval look. Measures: It is 32” high, 50” long and 28” deep. TAV58.
