Antique Japanese Lunch Boxes with Family Crest and Lacquer Ware

About the Item

This is the Japanese lunch boxes. Traditionally, Osechi (a special kind of food for the new year) is served with this kind of lunch boxes called 'JYUBAKO' which are three-tiered or five-tiered boxes. Family crest: This family crest which is printed on the top of boxes is called 'Ken-katabami' because it is mixed with weeds 'Katabami' and the swords 'Ken'. Katabami is weeds which has three single leaves with pretty little flowers. Since 'Katabami' is weeds with strong vitality and fertility and grows in clusters when it starts growing on the ground, it was favored by 'Busho (Warlords)' who valued succession as it had the meaning of 'prosperity of descendants'. In addition, the 'Ken-katabami' family crest, which is decorated with a sword, was strongly associated with the family crest of samurai families. This is made of paulownia woods and painted with lacquer-Wajima.
