About the Item

This exceptional 15th-century Venetian painted casket is a rare example of early decorative art from the late Medieval to early Renaissance period in the Republic of Venice, Italy. Hand-carved from wood and adorned with vibrant polychrome pigments, the casket’s lid features a striking painted scene of three finely dressed figures seated in a gondola. The central figure strums a lute, while the companions- clad in flowing robes of red and white- appear engaged in a moment of music, leisure, or courtly conversation. Measuring 30 cm in length, 20 cm in width, and 15 cm in height, the casket likely served a decorative or personal function, possibly for storing documents, valuables, or devotional items. The artwork is expressive and detailed, with characterful faces, elaborate hair, and the stylised rendering of water beneath the boat. The side panels are similarly adorned with painted bust-length figures, evoking the visual culture of 15th-century Venice. The piece is in a very good condition for its age, exhibits an appealing surface patina and a little pigment fading consistent with its centuries-old history. The construction, form, and imagery all point to a Venetian origin, with artistic influences from both Gothic and early Renaissance traditions. A visible collector’s stamp, reading “Sammlung Figdor” (Collection of Figdor), authenticates the box’s provenance as part of the celebrated collection of Dr. Albert Figdor, a prominent early 20th century Jewish collector in Vienna. The stamp adds significant historical and scholarly value to the piece. Items from his collection are now housed in major European museums. A rare and atmospheric object, this painted box/casket offers collectors and scholars alike a vivid window into the domestic and artistic life of Renaissance Venice. It is both a work of art and a historic artefact, rich in visual storytelling and cultural character.
