Betel Nut Box from Sumba Island with Tribal Engravings, Indonesia, c. 1950

About the Item

Betel Nut is consumed on a daily basis in a large portion of the Indonesian Archipelago. In Sumba, like many parts of Indonesia betel nut was offered as a sign of respect and hospitality when people would visit one's home. Often these betel nut boxes stored various nuts, leaves, tobacco, and other spices. The present box dates to the Early 20th Century with an array of compartments. It also features a wonderful tribal engraving finish. A wonderful piece to use as a jewellery box or storing/presenting other precious items.
