Casket, Tortoiseshell, Wood, Metal, Italy, 17th Century

About the Item

Rectangular casket with a flat lid that stands on small disc-shaped legs and has a simple lock shield on the front (key lock). The exterior is decorated with a combination of wood and tortoiseshell plates drawing simple geometric compositions, which, in the upper part, are organized around a slightly protruding relief; the back has been decorated with a simple geometric marquetry. Inside, the lid has a composition reminiscent of the exterior of this area, flanking a mirror; the base, compartmentalized to the right, has been decorated with geometric marquetry. The type of vault to which the piece belongs is one of the most common in European art (there are numerous examples outside this continent) since the middle ages, finding examples from the caliphate period in the Peninsula, Gothic, etc. The practice of employing tortoiseshell plates in furniture resurfaced in Europe during the 17th century. The high price and high demand for marine turtle shell furniture is explained by the scarcity of material, which was essential to import (usually from Central America) and that, for their work, a highly specialized workforce was required. Geometric compositions with ebony (or ebonized wood) and tortoiseshell plates are common in Italian examples since the 17th century especially in furniture known as "paper mills" or desks), although they are also used in Spain, South America, Flanders , etc., sometimes with clear differences according to time and region and others showing influences from areas that are not production. The scarcity and delicacy of this material means that there are only outstanding examples of pieces made with it in important private collections and outstanding institutions." A museum-grade mid-17th century Dutch silver marriage casket or knottekistje, circa 1660. Raised on solid silver bun feet the miniature casket is profusely engraved to all faces depicting a courting couple and architecture entwined in scrolling foliage. The reverse of the casket depicts the last supper, however, if you look closely, you can see a boy stealing food or wine from underneath! Possibly, this is the courting gentleman showing that he had a sense of humour. The scratch lined moulded top is surmounted with an intricate handle (once gilt) and floral patera to the centre. There are two inscriptions each within a cartouche 'In Lÿfde Beltact het al' and 'Getrouw tot in den doot' which loosely translates to 'faithful until the death' and 'love is everything'.
