About the Item

Rectangular base and smooth walls with top with sloping sides and straight top (troncopiramidal) casket made of carved wood. It is worth noting that the red velvet used to cover some of the main examples of this type of works, and to keep some elaborate ironwork in its decoration and with gold in many areas. The three fittings that connect the lid with the base have plantshaped finishes reminiscent of flordelised examples; the handle of the upper part has a disc in the centre and a few sharp ends; the shield of the lock resembles an heraldic one, topped with another simple vegetal element, and the bolt that unites it to the leg counts on simple architectural forms; to the right, in addition, there is a hook to prevent the opening of the accidental chest when opening the lock. To the interior, diaphanous and without compartmentalizing, it presents / displays a upholstery in Fine textile in a color similar to the one of the external velvet. This type of coffers or claddings lined with fabric (the examples that have velvet are the highest quality, because this is a textile made with silk or linen) is very common in Spain during the fifteenth century, extending in the 16th century , being of characteristic elements of the time of Spanish Catholic Kings, Elisabeth I and Ferdinand. As for the presence of a lining in the interior, it is due to the clear intention of conserving in the best possible state the contents of such a rich box, saving them from the possible damages that the nails of the ironworks could cause to the valuable objects that are kept in this type of containers, reason why also two hooks were placed flanking the lock to prevent its accidental opening once the key was turned. As for color, note that the most expensive dyes were red and blue, so these were the most expensive and valuable specimens. As has been pointed out, it is not usual for the old velvet to still retain its characteristic hair, reducing the number of works with which we can compare the present chest. It is much smaller than the pine wood lined with silk velvet piece, with iron reinforcements, which is preserved in the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid, made in Castile between the last quarter of the 15th century and the first of the 16th century.
