Chinese Hide Document Box, c. 1850

$2,280

About

This gorgeous document box once sat in the studio of a Qing-dynasty scholar-official, used to store and protect his works of fine calligraphy and landscape painting. The box is minimally decorated, wrapped in a layer of light brown pig's hide with softly worn texture. The interior is lined with indigo fabric in beautiful contrast to the pale exterior. Exemplifying the elegant restraint of Ming and Qing dynasty scholarly wares, this document chest links the present to the past with its timeless form.
