About the Item

Vintage large decorative box with sliding lid features handcrafted Modernist form, carved of Claro walnut wood, the wildly-colored and highly-figured type of walnut. The fine wood texture is emphasized by the graphic dark striping, characteristic of the wood, and the semi-matte tung oil and wax finish. The color ranges from light to chocolate brown, with subtle shades of grey, purple, and red, and light golden markings; the grain of Claro Walnut has a medium texture with a moderate, natural luster. The box has 3 compartments in different sizes that are lined with soft mocha brown suede. The box is sculpted with soft, rounded corners and asymmetrical handle, with light curves on the lid showcasing the striking wood grain. Beautiful natural color palette and obvious hand-crafted qualities add Organic Modern and Arts and Crafts elements to the Mid Century Modern design of the box. The box is signed on the bottom with the artist's stamp; it is in very good vintage condition with a beautiful, age-appropriate patina on wood surfaces. The elegant, sculptural form, high quality craftsmanship, and fine choice of exotic wood will make the box a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Transitional, Modern Country, Organic Modern, Arts and Crafts, Japandi, Collected, or Contemporary. Claro walnut is an American exotic tree, native to the upper Sacramento River basin. Circassian walnut trees (Juglans Regia), that were planted by Californian pioneers, with seed stock from Eastern Europe and the Old Russian Muslim Republics, cross-pollinated with the native northwestern black walnut (Juglans Hindsii), giving birth to the new trees that were named Claro walnut, meaning clear walnut in Spanish. Now Claro walnut trees are rarely planted, and usually only harvested because of old age and changing land use.
