About the Item

Very beautiful and rare clock with bird automaton. Made by Bontems at the end of 19th century in Paris. This French pendulum clock runs for 8 days, strikes the half hour and full hour. The pendulum is in the shape of a butterfly. There is a bird automaton behind faceted glass at the bottom. The clock makes the bird sing its tune 2 minutes before the hour. The bird sits in a nicely decorated setting with a landscape painting at the back. The bird moves its head (from left to right) and opens its beak while singing. The set was fully restored by our specialised workshop and is again in top condition, ready to provide another hundred years of wonder. For simular items : C. Bailly "Flights of Fancy" p328 or Roberts "Mystery, Novelty and Fantasy Clocks" p215
