About the Item

Early 19th Century German 13 Loth Silver Repoussé Landscape Box, Hanau, Circa 1820 Measures: 2.25" W x 1.5" D x 0.75" H / 62 Grams A finely worked small silver box crafted in 13 loth silver (.812 purity), likely from the Hanau region of Germany, renowned for its historicist silverwork. This charming example features richly detailed repoussé decoration depicting a pastoral landscape scene: a farmer milking a cow, another grazing beside her, and a cluster of gabled farmhouses nestled into rolling hills and trees. The lid is framed by undulating Rococo-style borders with trailing grapevine and floral ornamentation, repeated along the sides. The hinged lid opens to a gold-washed interior, its warm gilt finish well-preserved and indicative of quality continental craftsmanship. The hinge is subtly integrated, sturdy, and fully functional. The rim of the base is struck with three marks: • A “13” loth standard mark, indicating 812/1000 silver purity, used prior to the metric system • A silversmith’s mark, possibly "FH," • A stylized pseudo-mark of floral form—typical of Hanau silver, which often imitated earlier German and French styles This box is a wonderful example of early 19th-century romanticism in silverwork—its intimate scale and bucolic theme make it ideal for use as a pillbox or desk accessory. Collectible, decorative, and ready to gift or display.
