About the Item

Folk art: Norwegian lidded box (butter box) crafted in birch with rich woodcarving. The lid finial carved as a seated woman. Lid and rim decorated with reliefs of oak leaves, acorns, and stylised foliage. The box has a beautiful natural patina and remains in untouched, original condition. Originally used for storing butter, later used for tobacco. An excellent example of Norwegian woodcarving from the first half of the 19th century. Norway, c. 1820–1840.
