About the Item

A scarce antique, circa 1900, Japanese black lacquered wood writing slope / travel desk / document box. Born in Japan in the early 20th century, influenced by English Colonial Regency era campaign furniture, rectangular chest form, having a hinged top beautifully decorated with Japanese red maple trees, landscape scene of Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha shrine with view of Mount Fuji in the distance, opening to reveal fitted interior, with shuji calligraphy decorated paper-lined writing surface, each side lifting to interior storage compartment, divided interior with removable wooden pen rest tray, lidded compartment and inkwell sections, the exterior featuring patinated brass handles and concealed hidden drawer at left side. Dimensions: (approx) Closed: 5.75" High, 15" Wide, 9.5" Deep; Open: 4" High, 15" Wide, 19.25" Deep; 5.5lbs Great antique condition with nicely aged warm distressed patina. Wear consistent with over 120 years of age and indicative of moderate use. Retaining original antique character and charm throughout, including chippy paint finish losses, especially to the corners and edges, evidence of old touchups, minor scattered scuffs and scratches, age related paper shrinkage, nothing that detracts from the aesthetics or functionality but only adds to the sophisticated antique character, elegant rustic warmth and rich historical depth that can only be acquired over long periods of time
