About the Item

Exceptional lacquered and hand-painted Russian box. The painting depicts a sad young woman (probably due to a forced marriage with an older man). Note the fabulous colors. These hand-painted miniatures have an ancient and multi-secular tradition originating from the Russian painting of icons; the recurring motifs always concern themes such as legends, fables, battles, hunting scenes, flowers and landscapes taken from Russian myths. The main craft workshops, where these masterpieces were created, were - Palekh - Mstera - Kholuj - Fedoskino and Iwanowo and, after the fall of the Soviet Regime, the great Moscow School; all these names represent very different areas in the great Russian Federation. In these laboratories, work was still carried out and worked today according to what established tradition, almost always tempera colors were used, even if oil painting was not disdained; the bright color and brilliance were obtained by masterly combining the pearly colors and the gilding done with gold leaf; the basic material of these small boxes was the papier-mâché which was pressed into the shape after having been spread with glue, soaked in vegetable oil and subsequently dried; this material, obtained with the described system, could neither be broken nor deformed, remaining completely unchanged over the centuries. Having obtained the semi-finished product, before starting to paint, it was necessary to carry out the following works: Grouting, lacquering, filing, (painting) and finally enamelling with a special oily product; to paint the surfaces, each artist created his own colors by deciding whether to use tempera or oil; if one decided to use tempera, as tradition had it, he used an emulsion of egg yolk water and vinegar which was diluted to reach the desired density. The execution of these miniatures could last for many months, thus creating important masterpieces on snuffboxes, brooches, paintings, hanging plates, small boxes and many other objects. The most precious pieces are always signed and always marked with the place of origin; all over the world, these small lacquered boxes are in great demand by various collectors; they are made more precious by their presence in all the greatest museums of the Soviet Union.
