An Exceptional Cheroot Case Made in London by Rawlings & Summers, 1849

About the Item

An Exceptional Cheroot Case Made in London in 1849 by Rawlings & Summers. The case is broad rectangular in form, with a hinged top. It is beautifully engraved all over with crisp pluming scroll work, trellis work and raying flower heads. The front displays a scroll cartouche containing a vignette with a rural riverside scene, executed to the the highest standard. Rawlings and Summers were the premier box makers in London at this date and employed the finest engravers in their workshops. This is clearly shown with this piece. The reverse is engraved with the following contemporary inscription: This case together with a gold snuff box was Presented to Henry palmer ESQR By a few of his sincere friends as a slight token of their appreciation of his many private virtues of their regret at his departure from among them and of their admiration of the liberality, skill and perseverance by which he has converted the Haggerstone Fields into a populous and respectable district NOVEMBER 1850. The cover opens up to reveal a crisp set of marks on the rim of the base and also the inside of the cover displays a second set of marks. The presentation of this Cheroot case was recorded in "The Era" of 1st December 1850. This is almost certainly the finest Cheroot case we have offered over all of the years.
