About the Item

Beautifully crafted of hammered silver -- now with a soft, old silver patina -- enamel and rosewood, this exceptional decorative box depicts a wildly imaginative crane-like bird with blue and green plumage, its wings outspread and its long, narrow beak pointed downward. The box was made by the Ottaviani silver company in Recanati, Italy which is largely known for jewelry, but also produced decorative objects like this in the 1950s and early 1960s. The bird seems like it stepped out of an Arthur Rackham book illustration from the early 20th century, and yet the image is also very modern, like something from a Tolkien novel. The box is signed and shows the .925 silver standard mark.
