About the Item

Vintage carved wood box features Modernist abstract organic form and striking choice of solid wood. Asymmetrically sculpted box is covered with a rounded lid, lined with felt fabric to prevent friction. Minimal, Organic Modern lines of the piece emphasize the rich, beautiful wood grain with soft, but pronounced color contrast. The box is signed on the bottom with Buss stamp and written wood selection; it is in very good vintage condition with a beautiful, age-appropriate patina on wood surfaces. Sculptural, decorative box, distinguished with elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence, will make a great gift to a collector or design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Organic Modern, Japandi, Scandinavian Modern, Modern Country, Mid Century Moden, Collected, or Contemporary. Fred and Marilyn Buss are established American woodworking artists, based in Cazadero, California. They founded their studio in 1971, creating the concept of carved wooden boxes, made in organic style from highly curated selection of solid woods. These sculptural boxes begin with the selection of fine hardwoods, some imported from around the world or are natives of Northern California, which Fred gathers and mills himself; they take special satisfaction in salvaging trees that were damaged by storms, fires, or human interventions. The pieces are shaped and smoothed into rounded, flowing forms by a series of techniques Fred and-Marilyn have developed, and finished with Danish-style oil and wax treatment. Buss studio is represented by multiple galleries nationwide.
