About the Item

Complete with fifteen Glass Bottles From our Apothecary collection, we are delighted to offer this Satinwood Apothecary Box. The Apothecary Box of square form veneered in Satinwood with fine Kingwood crossbanding and Boxwood edging finished with two bone escutcheons, one a dummy to finish exterior symmetry of the Box. The top of the box is fitted with a large brass circular carry handle allowing ease of travel and stands upon a slightly raised plinth base. The Apothecary Box opens from the top revealing the fifteen glass bottles with stoppers before opening forward and extending fully showing the two wings of the box with unusual almost gothic viewing windows for the bottle labels. The box contains 15 partitions for glass bottles, a velvet lined inner lid, six drawers which comprise of two large drawers and four smaller drawers. The drawers contain a selection of apothecary objects and a set of brass scales with weights above a hand written label in the base. The Apothecary box dates to the late 18th century Georgian period during the reign of George III circa 1790. The Apothecary box is complete with a working lock and tasselled key. Kingwood also known as Violetwood, is found in South America and is violet-brown in colour with a darker grain. It is a very dense and hard wood that is only available for smaller items due to the small tree that yields it. Satinwood is found in India and Sri Lanka. It has a rich golden colour and an almost reflective sheen. Satinwood is traditionally used for high quality furniture. Boxwood can be found in Europe, Northwest Africa and Southwest Asia. It is a light cream that turns darker to brown when exposed to light. The trees are very small, which is suited to smaller projects like edging or inlay instead of veneers. Apothecary is an English term for a medical professional who formulates and dispenses medicine. The modern terms ‘pharmacist’ and ‘chemist’ have taken over this role. Georgian era was a period in British history dating from 1714-1837, the Georgian era after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV.
