About the Item

A top quality example of a late Victorian writing box with an integral writing slope / lap desk. This grand large example is made from beautiful olive wood with substantial cast brass handles to either side, the box comes complete with a working key. The lid lifts to reveal the original leather lined underside fitted with desk accessories. The fall-front drops revealing the beautifully fitted interior; when the front falls the sprung drawer comes out containing the two original inkwells either side of a removable pen tray with storage below and another small lidded compartment to pen nibs. The three small drawers above retain the original velvet lining, this would have been an expensive upgrade at the time is was made and beautifully preserved in superb condition each with the nickel drawer pull. The box has clearly been unused for many, many years, the leather bound books all intact with a very few entries, superb condition. There are two original slates, one plain for notes and the other printed for "Engagements", the plain does have hairlines as per the photos; this doesn't detract and it better left original than replaced. Both are framed in Olivewood. The back full length compartment contains a leather portfolio / blotter. The fall-front opens once more revealing the pristine writing slope with the original velvet covering with the top section having a nickel catch opening with space below for storage of letters and papers. The calendar cards have been professionally reproduced for current use. A tremendous find in superb undamaged condition, An impressive size having a footprint measuring 17" x 9 1/2" and standing 11 1/2" tall to top of lid while closed. Victorian in era, dating to circa 1890. Item ID: 40460.
