About the Item

From the Grand Tour era, a set of two glass scent bottles in a fitted leather case with key, circa early 19th Century. The Grand Tour was a 17th to early 19th century custom of the traditional trip through Europe, with Italy as a key destination. Young European men and women of the wealthy class were chaperoned by a tutor or family member – traveling and collecting souvenirs. The idea was to experience new sights and cultures, and to learn about the world in a hands-on way. Most likely of Italian origin, the tooled leather fitted case holds two scent bottles made of heavy clear glass with faceted stoppers. The bottles fit snugly into a lined compartment. The case shows tooling in gold and black, with brass appointments. The top knot handle is also made of leather, the box sits on four ball feet. The working key fits into a brass keyhole. The box is fully lined, the bottles are in very good condition, showing label residue. Case: 4 in. L x 2.75 in. W x 4.25 in. H Bottles: 1.75 in. square x 3 in. H Good antique conditions. Extremely well made. The leather hinge that held the rear of the lid in place is gone. However, the box still locks. The expected wear to the surface of the leather.
