Group of Three Miniature Tartanware Boxes
$750per set

About
In the mid-1800s tartan became the most popular decoration for souvenirs of Scotland and the box makers of Mauchline soon invented machines to rule the multi-colored clan tartans with many traditional plaid patterns. Soon, new machines were able to speed up the production of these trinkets by printing clan tartan designs onto paper and the box makers then applied the paper to the wooden articles. The tartans name was applied in tiny gold letters before varnishing and polishing. In this group the coin box bears the name Buchanan, the larger "chest" bears the name Caledonia and the small box is unmarked.
