About

A fine and unusual Japanese black lacquer and mother of pearl inlaid box, Momoyama Period, 16th century, Japan. The large box and cover featuring a design of blossoming plum branches rendered in mother of pearl on black lacquer. The interior a striking vermilion red. The sides of the box decorated with mother of pearl inlaid family crests, known as mon. The lacquer somewhat distressed with a distinct craqueleur and a feeling almost like leather. Some of the mother of pearl missing, with restoration done in gilding. Missing the original hardware. Provenance: Christie's New York, 2005, Deaccession from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY

    The lacquer with some chips, as seen in photos. Some of the mother of pearl missing, and infilled with gilding. The metal fittings missing. The surface of the lacquer somewhat buckled and cracked, and with an almost leathery feel.
