About the Item

This stunning Karl Palda Art Deco cigarette box is a prime example of 1930s Czech glass design, featuring a sleek rectangular body with an abstracted, cut-glass lid. The geometric Art Deco motif is accentuated by precise etching and bold black enamel detailing, creating a striking interplay of linear patterns and abstract symmetry. The meticulous craftsmanship and dramatic contrast of clear and enameled glass reflect the machine-age aesthetics and modernist influences that defined the Art Deco era. Karl Palda was a master of Czechoslovakian Art Deco glassware, renowned for his work with cut, etched, and enameled glass designs. His pieces were highly sought after during the interwar period and continue to be collected today for their sophisticated styling, high-quality craftsmanship, and bold geometric designs. His glassware, particularly perfume bottles, vanity accessories, and cigarette cases, perfectly encapsulated the luxury and streamlined elegance of the 1920s and 1930s. The black enamel detailing seen in this piece is a hallmark of Palda’s work, enhancing the crisp, angular forms that were so iconic in Art Deco design. This box remains in very good vintage condition with only minor signs of age. The black enamel is well-preserved, with just one small area of loss about the size of a pen tip. The interior lip has a minor rough spot (approximately 1/16 of an inch), and the top features a single tiny fleabite on the enameled triangular portion, both of which are barely noticeable when displayed. The base shows light wear, as expected, and foam feet have been added for protection—these can be easily removed if desired.
