A Latched Wooden Box with Brass Overlay Decorations, 20th Century Descriptions: The ebon rectangular box decorated with overlaid Arabesque brass motifs punctuated by nailhead bosses, with a mirrored interior lid. Secured by two brass hinges to the hollow base, with red velveteen lining. Dimensions: Height: 22cm Width: 41cm Depth: 22.5cm Origin and Purpose: These chests originated in Surat, Gujarat, India, and were used as trading chests on dhow ships for transporting valuable goods like spices, cotton, and gemstones across trade hubs like Diu, Surat, Basra, Zanzibar, and Bombay. Materials and Construction: They are typically made from solid wood and clad in brass, with ornate brass metal corner plates and brass studs forming geometric and Moorish-inspired patterns. Features: Zanzibar chests often feature brass carrying handles, a hinged lid revealing a plain interior (though some have divided compartments and small drawers), and some may include additional drawers along the bottom. Cultural Significance: Their design reflects a blend of Omani, Indian, and African influences due to Zanzibar's historical role as a key trade hub.
