Late 19th Century Tramp Art Box

About the Item

Vintage late 19th century Tramp Art Box inset with mirror and fabric. "Tramp Art" objects began in the 1870s, driven by the abundance of wooden cigar boxes and their availability to artists. They were very popular during the Great Depression. Each piece was created by humble hands (usually self-taught woodworkers, sometimes referred to as 'tramps'), with the use of simple tools such as penknives, with the materials layered into geometric shapes. They were crafted by carving or notching into decorative patterns. The exterior front contains three round wooden medallions with letters 'L' and 'P" and a center floral design. This box opens to a fabric covered interior with a center mirror on inside top. Box can be used to store small personal items, jewelry, etc.
