About the Item

Gorgeously glazed in tones of gold and warm, dark gray, this lidded ceramic box depicts a leaping deer on its cover, the spots on its fur echoed by the large snowflakes in the air. The artist, Waylande Gregory, was a renowned WPA sculptor and innovative ceramicist who produced a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic beginning in his college days, through his years working with Lorado Taft and later when he created large multi-figure pieces for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A major retrospective of Gregory's work was recently organized by the University of Richmond's Museums.
