About

Rare elegant 1970s chrome and brass candy gift box for A La Marquise De Sevigne, finest Paris chocolatier store. Round modernist shape with shiny chromed metal and brass accent and large ball finial. Marked underside with the store logo. This lovely bonbonniere (chocolate candy box) is a fine example of the limited edition gift packaging, the company issued every year for Christmas. Each year the model is different and the store commissioned the finest artists to create those gift boxes. Over the decades the style of the box follows the trend of the period in terms of design and is considered high collectible objects. Measurements: 5.50 in. diameter (14 cm) x 3.57 in. high (9 cm). A La Marquise De Sevigne: Founded in Royat (center of France) in 1892 by Clementine and Auguste Rouzaud, Marquise de Sévigné chocolates, with their signature blue boxes, are among the most recognizable French chocolates. At the end of the 19th Century, Clémentine sent a box of their finest selection to the French poet and dramatist Edmond Rostand (1868-1918), who at the time was living in Vichy at Le Pavillon de Sévigné, a former Madame de Sévigné residences during the 17th Century. From that event, the idea to rename the business A la Marquise de Sévigné was born. The chocolatiers gradually became famous. Between 1900 and 1914, the couple opened 11 new stores in France and soon thereafter began selling their chocolates abroad. The company remained in the same family until the late 1960s then was sold to a large food group. In 1973 the company is bought again but the Burrus family, artisan chocolate makers since 1911. The chocolate store opened by Madame Rouzaud on Place de la Madeleine in Paris remains the company’s flagship store.
