About the Item

This bold and sophisticated decorative box was realized by the esteemed artisans Gene Jonson and Robert Marcius in the United States, circa 1970. This is a particularly stunning example of their practice. It features a tessellated antler top- showcasing the inherent organic texture of the material- with a central oval medallion in anthracite granite. This grisaille medallion, circumscribed in bronze, appears particularly brilliant owing to a rich natural profusion of mica. The top sits on a volumetric rectangular base in lustrous chrome, whose interior is lined in anthracite gray suede. While this is a perfectly utilitarian box- ideal for storing any number of precious items- it is also an objet d'art in its own right that promises to beautify any surface that it graces. The piece is signed "Jonson + Marcius" and inscribed "No 11186". Excellent vintage condition. In the early 1970s, Gene Jonson and Robert Marcius Henri Bendel and Bergdorft Goodman, among others, with their handcrafted jewelry. They also custom made furniture, sculptures and accessories for the renowned midcentury designer Karl Springer. Other clients of the New York firm included Cartier and Tiffany. Their work continues to have a thriving market of collectors around the world. American, circa 1970 Dimensions: 6.25" H x 10" W x 6.25" D.
