Mongolian Yak Butter Container, c. 1900
About the Item
This beautifully-aged wooden container dates to the late 19th century and was used to transport and store a nutritious butter made from yak’s milk. Food was scarce on the Mongolian steppes and had to be carefully rationed so that nothing was wasted. Carved of elmwood and bamboo, the slats and lid are tightly joined to create the perfect seal. The container is finished with a simple leather handle and a wooden trim designed to look like a twining rope.
