New Zealand ‘Sovereign Woodworkers Ltd’ Specimen Timber Trinket Box

About the Item

This delightful trinket box made of specimen New Zealand timbers was made in the mid 1950s. New Zealand at this time had a small but viable tourism industry, based on the country's exceptional natural attractions - majestic mountains, unique flora and fauna, thermal springs and unspoiled beaches. This 'natural wonderland' was the theme of all tourism advertising at the time, and has remained an important part of the national identity. In this spirit, woodworker Austin Brasell founded his souvenir manufacturing workshop in Tawa Street, Whanganui, with partners Arnold (Arnie) Burling and Edwin (Wyn) Hart in 1949. Sovereign Woodworkers Ltd showcased New Zealand's unique native timbers in all their products. They made a range of small, easily transportable utility items such as timber trays, small boxes, desk accessories, rulers (iconic within New Zealand as a memento of one's school years) and bookends. Their work would remain popular with tourists for 70 years. Their products are now prized for their character and beauty, quality and nostalgia. Products made by Sovereign Woodworkers Ltd have become increasingly collectable after the sad demise of the company due to the closure of New Zealand borders during the Covid pandemic. This is the Number 11 Trinket Box. The letterpress label inside the lid lists the names of the timbers used in its construction. The interior of the box has been felted - glue is applied and a dusting of felted wool fibers is adhered. The felting is in excellent condition. We have removed an exterior lacquer, which was in poor repair. We restored the box with hard wax oil, which offers moisture protection and a low sheen, so you can fully enjoy the character of the timber in everyday use, without concern for wear of the finish. We love this sweet, nostalgic item. It has excellent design chops and a delightful decorative quality.

An excellent and very stylish impasto oil on board of Ranunculus flowers in an urn vase. The expressionist impasto paint application is fascinating. Clearly the work of a competent colourist. It really evokes the texture of Ranunculas flowers, their weight and the vibrancy of their colour. Unsigned, dating from the 1960s. The style is Expressionist.
