About the Item
This is an elegant, oval-shaped decorative box with an Asian-inspired design. Origin and when made are unknown - found in the collection of our founder, Dixon Smith. Purchased at least 40 years ago. This box could be much older than we indicated - but we do not know the history of this piece.
It appears to be made from lacquered wood or papier-mâché, with a smooth, glossy finish. The box is predominantly deep red or burgundy, a traditional color often used in East Asian decorative art. The lid features a finely painted bird perched on a flowering branch, executed in gold, black, and brown tones. The branch and foliage are delicate, with stylized leaves and berries adding to the botanical theme. Gold detailing continues subtly around the sides, possibly showing more vines or floral motifs. A gold border runs along the edge of the lid, adding a refined frame to the design. The overall aesthetic is reminiscent of Chinese or Japanese lacquerware, likely influenced by Chinoiserie or traditional Asian craftsmanship. This box is both functional and decorative—ideal for storing small items like jewelry or keepsakes—and it carries a quiet, vintage charm. Its design suggests it may be a collectible or antique-style piece.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. There is cracking and loss of the lacquer on the bottom of the box. The hinge is also loose but fully attached (see video). Minor scuffing on the box as well.
