Rare, Important Art Deco Porcelain Box by Kenton Hills

About the Item

Brilliantly glazed in spring green, ivory and dark brown, and decorated with highly abstract zigzag and foliate motifs, this highly rare covered box is a superb example of American Art Deco design. It was produced by Kenton Hills near Cincinnati, Ohio, founded in 1937 by William Hentschel, who had been one of Rookwood Pottery's most famed artists in the 1920s and 1930s. Hentschel was fond of dotted leaf motifs, which here are combined with zigzagged lines that dissolve into fragments. The bottom of the box displays the Kenton Hills mark, and one side retains -- again very rare -- its original paper label.
