Regency Leather Studded Campaign Case Trunk by Chapple & Sons Initials "I.M"

About the Item

Regency leather studded traveling case by Chapple & Sons of Cheapside London with studded brass initials ( I * M ) This compact Regency trunk is constructed from black leather on a pine carcass and is adorned with numerous brass dome-topped studs. The lid features a swan neck handle on the top and a ring handle with key. The interior is lined with paper that has black crosses printed on it, and the maker's label secured to the inside of the lid. A trunk like this could have been useful for storing small personal items and papers. The style at the time involved numerous dome-headed studs set in patterns to both decorate and provide protection. Studs also create the initials "i.M" to the top. The Chapple family was an established trunk maker, active for most of the first half of the 19th century. William senior, who was born in 1789, had his son William junior, who was born in 1803, joined him in the business later. As trunk makers of campaign furniture of this period they enjoyed the patronage of British nobility and suppliers to the Army & Navy.
