About the Item

Soviet era Fedoskino hand painted lacquer box by Belosvetova, after Konstantin Makovsky, "Children Running from the Storm", 1872, in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow 1966 Very fine quality hand painted vintage Fedoskino box depicting two beautiful young children returning from mushroom picking, running from the storm. The older giving the younger a piggy back ride, a basket filled with mushrooms at her waist, running along a forest path with a dramatic skyline in the background. Signed Fedoskino, 1966, lower left Artist signed: Belosvetova, lower right Made in USSR at the base of the box Condition: Very Good The original painting by Makovsky is considered one of his masterworks and is in the permanent collection of the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow. This wonderful work alludes to the subject of mushroom foraging in Russia, a revered tradition, passed down through generations. The culinary delights of mushrooms are well known for their delicious taste and health benefits. In Russia, mushroom hunting is deeply embedded in regional folklore, with numerous folk tales surrounding the subject- legends of adventures in the vast forests and fanciful encounters with woodland spirits. The Fedoskino workshop officially became a part of the famed Lukutin factory in May of 1910. The first works of the Fedoskino cooperative were acquired by the Moscow Provincial Museum. In the 1920's, Fedoskino artists carried on the traditions of the Lukutin and Vishniakov lacquer work. 1930's onward, the Fedoskino workshop attracted talented artists such as Vasily Lavrov, Afanasy Kulikov, Alexei Kruglikov, Gennady Skripunov, Ivan Strakhov and Sergei Kozlov.
