About the Item

This striking studio pottery box by Dr. Sequoia Miller was created in the 1990s, a formative period before he shifted from full-time maker to one of the most important thinkers and curators in the field of ceramics today. The design is minimal but evocative—rooted in the traditions of handcraft and elevated by a modernist eye for proportion and restraint. The box’s refined geometry and muted glaze create a contemplative presence that is both useful and sculptural. Miller began his journey in ceramics through hands-on workshops at institutions like Penland and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, studying under some of the most respected potters of the time. In the mid-1990s, he relocated to the Pacific Northwest and established a pottery studio in a former boat shed, crafting functional forms with intention and quiet authority. Over the course of more than a decade, he developed a body of work known for its balance between material honesty and conceptual depth. His evolution into scholarship came through advanced academic study: a BA in Russian and Art History from Brandeis, followed by a Master’s in Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture from Bard, and ultimately a PhD in Art History from Yale University. His dissertation explored the connections between studio ceramics and conceptual art practices in the 1960s and 70s—positioning ceramics not just as craft, but as a language of contemporary expression. Miller’s curatorial career includes “The Ceramic Presence in Modern Art” at the Yale University Art Gallery, a landmark exhibition that repositioned ceramics within the canon of modern art. Today, he serves as the Chief Curator of the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, one of the world’s premier institutions dedicated to ceramic arts. This box offers more than just aesthetic value—it’s an artifact from the early practice of a cultural thinker who has helped shape how we understand ceramics today. A superb acquisition for any collector interested in the intersections of craft, concept, and contemporary design.
