About the Item
An exquisite vintage Italian tiger’s eye intarsia box stamped by Gori & Zucchi (later to become Unoaerre), retailed in Ravenna in c. 1960s.
The box is veneered in finely banded tiger’s eye quartz with a beautiful pattern and lustre that glistens as it catches the light. Tiger’s Eye is a hard stone to work, which makes the quality and precision of this piece all the more remarkable. The interior of the box is cream-coloured marble with a slight pinkish hue.
The hinge is of silver gilt, bearing the Italian hallmark ‘800’ together with the hallmark ‘1 AR’ for the silversmiths GORI & ZUCCHI in Arezzo. Gori & Zucchi was founded in 1926 and later became Unoaerre, the renowned Italian jewellery house and founders of the Goldsmith’s Museum in Arezzo. The hinge is solid and the box closes perfectly.
It is of exquisite craftsmanship and bears the original red and gold label to its base:
