About the Item

A Timber Gilt-Metal Embellished Box, 19th Century Description: The wooden surface decorated with gilt-metal embellishments, including floral and foliate motifs, punctuated by nailhead bosses, with a hinged chamfered rectangular lid joined by hinges and a chain to the rectangular base, the interior lined with gilt-embroidered cloth. Provenance: Private Australian Collection. Dimensions: Height: 30.5cm Width: 31.5cm Depth: 22cm It is known as a dowry chest or strongbox. These chests are typically made of solid wood and feature decorative brass overlay and studs, often arranged in intricate patterns. Origin and Use: Zanzibar chests originated in East Africa, particularly in Zanzibar and coastal areas like Kenya, and were historically used to store valuables, spices, and dowries in the 18th and 19th centuries. Symbolism: The style and size of a Zanzibar chest often served as a status symbol for the bride's family in marriage agreements, and legends about Persian princes and Swahili princesses are associated with them. Features: They commonly feature hinged tops, fitted compartments, and sometimes secret drawers. The brass studs and overlays create distinctive patterns, with some designs on the top said to symbolize concepts like the "Fountain of Youth". Modern Use: Today, these chests are sought-after antique pieces and are often repurposed as accent pieces in homes.
