About the Item

Heading : Tunbridge ware stationery box with image of Eridge Castle. Date : c1850 Period : Victoria Origin : Tunbridge Wells. Kent Decoration : Central mosic of Eridge Castle within a naturalistic border. Front panels decorated with a moth and chainlink border. Internally painted blood red. Size : 21.8cm width. 11.6cm depth. 13.4cm height Condition : A number of areas of lifting and splitting in the veneers but they do not detract. Working lock and key Restoration : Interior repainted Weight : 599 grams The banding is typical of Edmund Nye’s work as is the moth. This was in all likelihood made by Nye with Thomas Barton as his foreman. The image of Eridge Castle itself is not a useful identifier. virtually all Tunbridge ware makers utilised a version of it.
