Tunbridge Ware - A Writing Slope Box Depicting Battle Abbey Gatehouse, c1870

About the Item

Tunbridge Ware - A Writing Slope Box Depicting Battle Abbey Gatehouse, c1870 Additional Information: Heading: Tunbridge Ware - A Writing Slope Depicting Battle Abbey Gatehouse Date : c1870 Period : Victoria Origin : Tunbridge Wells, Kent Decoration : A standard writing box format in very fine condition; the main design is Henry Hollamby's rendering of Battle Abbey Gatehouse - a view which is virtually identical when viewed today, other than the trees to the left being somewhat diminished. The remaining floral friezes are pure Hollamby, featuring roses with their exquisite '3D' shading and a proliferation of lifelike fronds and complementary flowers. Internally, all the elements are present and in fine condition, other than a small patch of the red velvet writing surface which seems to have worn against the small handle of the lift-off 'pen tray' lid. A working lock and key, and a pair of matched ink-pots with stickware lids complete this very fine example of 19th century craftsmanship Size : 31.0 W x 27.2 D x 8.0 H cm Condition : Excellent; a little ware to the velvet writing pad as above Restoration : none other than a possible, old veneer inset to the back edge of the lid, above one hinge
