ABOUT
An impressive, heavy solid bronze mid-century ashtray designed by California artist and sculptor Wah Ming Chang. Known later in life for his sculptures and the props he designed for Stars Trek, The Original Series.
Stamped “Bronze Originals of California” and “Design Wah Ming Chang”. The bronze is a beautifully patinated, but could be polished to a brilliant, shiny gold color if desired.

HISTORY
Wah Ming Chang (August 2, 1917 – December 22, 2003) was an American designer, sculpture and artist. With the encouragement of his adoptive father, James Blading Sloan, he began exhibiting his prints and watercolors at the age of seven to highly favorable reviews. Chang worked with Sloan on several theater productions and in the 1940s, they briefly created their own studio to produce films. He is known later in life for his sculpture and the props he designed for: Stars Trek, The Original Series.

HISTORY
"Francisco Rebajes (1905-1990)
He was among the first craft jewelers in Greenwich Village, New York City. Rebajes came to New York in 1922 from his native Dominican Republic at the age of 16. Knowing little English, he found a way to support himself working in cafeterias. In 1932, Francisco married Pauline Schwartz. Still without money, he and Pauline were given shelter, in a basement, from a kind friend. Here is where Rebajes used an old set of plumbers' tools to create a collection of animals from tin cans. Those sculptures were then exhibited on an ironing board at the first Washington Square outdoor show.
