About the Item

A superb quality ladies’ travelling vanity case, veneered in richly figured coromandel wood with brass edging and escutcheons, the hinged lid opening to reveal a fitted interior lined in deep royal blue velvet and ruched silk. The upper compartment fitted with a complete suite of cut glass jars and accessories (mother of pearl mounted implements (two lacking), all with finely engine-turned silver lids and mounts, each piece hallmarked for London 1865. The tray lifts to reveal further compartments for jewellery and personal items, with a concealed drawer below and a spring-release side drawer for stationery or documents. The case retains its original key and working Bramah lock. Retailed by Mayer & Co., Liverpool Hallmarked London, 1865 Engraved retailer’s plaque: Mayer & Co., Liverpool Condition: Excellent condition throughout, silver & glass complete, interior lining in fine original order. Mayer & Co. of Liverpool: Mayer & Co. of Liverpool were among the leading luxury retailers of the Victorian period, known for commissioning high-quality fitted dressing and writing boxes from the best London cabinetmakers. This example, dated 1865, demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship and completeness, making it a fine collector’s piece of the era. Joseph Mayer (1803-86) was at first apprenticed to his brother-in-law, Joseph Wordley, a jeweller but in 1844-5 Mayer set up his own jewellery and silversmith business in Liverpool. He became a passionate collector with a strong interest in antiquities and Mediaeval artefacts, regularly travelling abroad to study and buy. He left his collection to the City of Liverpool and it is now held at the Walker Art Gallery.

By Hunt and Roskell From our Vanity Box collection, we are delighted to offer this Coromandel Silver Gilt Vanity Box by Hunt and Roskell. The Vanity Box of rectangular shape with brass edging veneered in exotic Coromandel with a vacant initial plaque. The front and lid of the box feature brass stringing framing the outer perimeter with a barrel shaped escutcheon to the front. The exterior is finished with twin brass handles, one to each side with shaped accents and ball inlays. The interior of the Vanity Box is lined in royal blue velvet with a ruched inner lid containing a rear compartment holding a free standing mirror and storage for letters. The Vanity Box houses fourteen cut glass jars with engine turned sliver gilt Sterling Silver lids with vacant initial plaques to the centre of each jar. The Silver is hallmarked London, Sterling Silver by Charles Rawlings & William Summers and is dated 1846. To the centre of the top tray there is a rectangular removable tool pad containing various vanity tools. The top tray is removable via the two metal loop tabs to each side, located beneath the tray is a second tray with multiple partitions for jewellery, rings and or cufflinks.The second jewellery tray can be removed to access a larger storage area in the base. The rear of the Vanity Box is partitioned and contains five larger glass jars and an extremely rare silver gilt cup with a lined cushion for the glass jar which sits inside. The interior of the box is finished with a Bramah lock signed on the lock plate J.Bramah, 124 Piccadilly. The Vanity Box comes with its original fitted leather case with full leather straps and dates to the middle of the 19th century during latter years of the Victorian period and the reign of Queen Victoria dated 1846.
