About the Item

This is a beautiful antique French enamel ormolu-mounted rectangular casket, circa 1870 in date. The casket is decorated with grisaille in striking shades of grey on a black ground, depicting children at play. It is framed within a tooled gilded ormolu frame and raised on decorative acanthus scroll feet. The lid opens to reveal a white porcelain interior with the original button backed silk base. There is no mistaking its unique quality and design, which is sure to make it a treasured piece for any discerning collector. Provenance: The collection of the late Ronnie Kirkwood and George Dixon. Dimensions in cm: Height 11 x width 21 x depth 12 Dimensions in inches: Height 4 inches x width 8 inches x depth 5 inches A grisaille is a painting executed entirely in shades of grey or of another neutral greyish color. It is particularly used in large decorative schemes in imitation of sculpture. Many grisailles include a slightly wider color range, like the Andrea del Sarto fresco illustrated. Paintings executed in brown are referred to as brunaille, and paintings executed in green are called verdaille. A grisaille may be executed for its own sake, as underpainting for an oil painting (in preparation for glazing layers of color over it), or as a model for an engraver to work from. "Rubens and his school sometimes use monochrome techniques in sketching compositions for engravers." Full coloring of a subject makes many more demands of an artist, and working in grisaille was often chosen as being quicker and cheaper, although the effect was sometimes deliberately chosen for aesthetic reasons. Grisaille paintings resemble the drawings, normally in monochrome, that artists from the Renaissance on were trained to produce; like drawings they can also betray the hand of a less talented assistant more easily than a fully colored painting.
