Bronze Jewelry-Casket with Ornate Etchings and Cameos Inlaid by Tahan of Paris

About the Item

Bronze Jewelry-Casket with Ornate Etchings and Cameos Inlaid by Tahan of Paris Gorgeously detailed jewelry box by Tahan of Paris. There are four Cameos bezel set on three sides of the box, as well as the lid. Throughout the entire piece, there is detailed floral etching, matching the three-dimensional ornamentation. This piece has the original lining. Also a owners cartouche or Greek figure applique by the key hole. Lock mechanism works, and includes key. However, round insert has been repaired, so the can will not lock. 5"H x 7.25"D x 5.88"W Described as proprietors of 'ébénisterie de lux', the atelier of Tahan participated in many of the major international exhibitions between 1849 and 1867, winning a silver medal in 1849 and a Médaille d'or in 1867. However, as superior in quality as his works were, the 1867 exhibition jury questioned Tahan's role as sole producer of his exhibited pieces, considering his close relationship with various well-known ébénistes of the time, including Eugène Cornu and Joseph Cremer (see D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Français du XIXe Siècle, Paris, 1984, p. 595).
