Coromandel Jewellery Cabinet Betjemann & Sons (attributed)

About the Item

Dome Topped with Three Drawers From our Jewellery Boxes collection, we are pleased to offer this stunning dome-topped Coromandel Jewellery cabinet. The Cabinet of rectangular shape with a domed top veneered in Coromandel with brass fixings including flush-mounted carry handles and shaped escutcheons. The double doors open to reveal three individual drawers with matching flush-mounted brass handles and strong brass hinges located from top to bottom. The drawers are lined with Royal Blue Velvet having various storage compartments, the top drawer with a two compartments, the second with three compartments and the third with two compartments. The box dates to the 19th century Victorian era circa 1875. We firmly attribute the box to renowned box & tantalus makers Betjemann & Sons due to the woods used, quality and characteristics of the cabinet. The Jewellery Cabinet comes complete with working lock and key. Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. Betjemann & Sons George Betjemann started as an apprentice cabinet maker from a young age working for his Father in Law. In 1848, his two sons George William Betjemann and John Betjemann joined him under apprenticeships until 1846 when George William Betjemann started his own business with his two sons. In 1859 George moved to a new premises on Pentonville road, London. This was when the business became known as ‘Betjemann & Sons’. John Betjemann was grandfather of the later famous poet laureate Sir John Betjemann. Measurements (centimetres) 36cm High x 31cm Wide x 22cm Deep
