French late 19th century Art Nouveau Period Ormolu box

About the Item

A stunning and high quality French late 19th century Art Nouveau Period Ormolu box. This exceptional box is raised on four foliate feet below large scale scrolled acanthus leaf corner mounts which flank the four sides of the box. Each side displays intricate attention to detail with scrolled grape vines flowing throughout and a beautiful nymph at the center. The nymph holds impressive swaging foliate garlands which connect to the foliate corner mounts. The striking lid is supported by a richly chased laurel band below the richly decorated top surrounded by a band of foliate chandelles and a central medallion. The central figure of the lid is Hestia, the goddess of the hearth, home, and sacrificial flame. The lid opens on its original hinges and displays a gold fabric lined interior.
