Italian Leather-Clad and Gilt-Tooled Tabletop Jewelry or Trinket Box, Mid-20th C

About the Item

**Italian Leather-Clad and Gilt-Tooled Tabletop Jewelry or Trinket Box, Mid-20th Century** This unusually sculptural leather-covered box, marked *Made in Italy and Makers address Pelletterie Firenze* on its underside, reflects the high craftsmanship and decorative whimsy characteristic of mid-20th-century Italian giftware. Clad entirely in rich oxblood and burgundy-toned leather, the box is formed with a highly distinctive gadrooned base, each lobe accented by delicate gilt tooling. Raised on four canted feet and secured by a functioning lock and key with gilt escutcheon, the form evokes both Baroque exuberance and 20th-century luxury novelty. The box also includes a musical element and can be turned via the key on the bottom. The domed lid is trimmed in gold tooling and features a central neoclassical flourish of scrollwork and dot detailing, all hand-applied. The interior is lined in a deep green felt, divided into two compartments—typical of jewelry or cufflink boxes from the postwar Italian export era. The combination of quality leatherwork, bold sculptural form, and fine gilt detail points to manufacture by one of the skilled Florentine workshops known for high-end desk and tabletop objects produced for European and American boutiques. Boxes of this type were often retailed in luxury shops from Rome to New York between the 1950s and 1970s and remain collectible for their theatrical forms, fine materials, and lasting functionality. This example, with its unusual bulbous base, stands apart from more conventional leather writing accessories and reflects the Italian postwar taste for ornamented but usable art objects. A highly decorative and charming piece, it speaks to Italy’s continued reputation for refined leather artistry and mid-century design flair. Measures: 11.375" w x 4" h x 5.5" d.
