About the Item

Overgrown X Mikimoto by Mark Sturkenboom Materials: clockwork, natural grown Mikimoto freshwater pearl, 18kt goldplated brass, crystal, natural leather Dimensions: W 35 x D 25 x H 20 cm OVERGROWN is a reinterpretation and an evolution of how MIKIMOTO develops their product. It balances between being in control and easing the constraints. The Akoya pearl grows in several years to perfection, this is part pre-manipulated but the outcome is not always a guaranteed success. Not only does it takes patience but also the understanding of not being a 100 % in control. Like MIKIMOTO keeps their oysters, this work is kept in a solution which allows to grow the pearl further, beyond MIKIMOTO standards. Crystals evolve out of the mechanism, out of the gold and out of the pearls. MIKIMOTO masters the skill of patience, in this work patience plays a big role as well. This work is a fusion between crafts and accepting circumstances and processes that operate beyond your power and control. In one cabinet we find an crystalized device holding an engagement ring, twirling around, waiting to be given away. In the other cabinet we find a collier that bares the key that opens the cabinet showcasing the ring. Who controls the access to the cabinet while wearing the key and who is waiting to propose? Mark Sturkenboom (Driebergen, 1983) is an artist that graduated with honors in 2012 at Artez Academy for the Arts in Arnhem/Netherlands. Since 2012 he works as a conceptual product designer or artist in his atelier in Utrecht. His work balances between art and design, he stretches the boundaries between art and design. He offers new viewpoints and rituals to deal with life. ‘My focus lies not on the appearance of things, but on what I call the deeper layers in the relation between an object and its owner. ‘I try to call forward a myriad of associations and stimulate our thinking about what counts to us in our lives. I examine the meaning of objects and products and set them free from their conventional and initial use.’ Sturkenboom reinterpretates products that are often intertwined with the themes love, time or has an inclination with a collective value perception. Engaging his work, you probably will need to start making ‘moral’ decisions. For instance his Ark, table clock, urn or vase are not just functional or only good looking. In their presence and while handling them they invite you to think about time, love passed or the possibility to free yourself from the burden of your possessions by destroying them. His work is exhibited and part of private collections worldwide, from New York to Shanghai, from Tokio to Amsterdam.
